Stuff You Should Never Preserve in a Storage Unit

A self-storage unit is an excellent storage solution for many items; however, a few items cannot store for safety and legal reasons. Like any other rental space, your lease has storage limitations, and if you fail to comply with these policies and regulations, you may be held liable for any potential damage. It would help if you never put things inside your storage unit to save you time and stress during your next move.

Food and Perishable Items

Storage units are not suitable for use as a pantry. Food and perishable items left out for an extended period can attract unwanted critters such as rodents and insects, destroying your unit and neighbouring units. Second, expired foods begin to rot and emit foul odours, creating ideal conditions for bacteria and mould to grow and spread inside your unit. Keep perishable food items out of your storage unit to avoid these issues.

Animals

Doesn’t it go without saying? Never leave a pet or any other animal in a storage unit! Self-Storage units cannot be used as kennels for pets or as holding facilities for exotic animals. If you cannot care for a pet due to a move, leave it with a family member or trusted friend, or adapt it to someone who will provide the animal with the loving home it deserves.

Hazardous Materials

Chemicals, acids, gases, pesticides, alcoholic beverages, fireworks, and medical waste are dangerous and explosive materials that cannot store inside. Items that burn, explode, or corrode are a severe risk to human health, cause costly property damage, and are illegal.

Ammunition and Weapons

Firearms, ammunition, and other weaponry — think hand grenades, flame throwers, and anything else you don’t want going off accidentally — are almost always prohibited from being stored in a storage unit. It is because the facility has numerous liability issues and obvious safety concerns. If your unit is auctioned off, it can cause many issues for the facility.
